Understanding KHDA Ratings

KHDA (Knowledge and Human Development Authority) inspects every private school in Dubai annually and assigns an overall performance rating. Understanding what these ratings mean is the single most important step in evaluating Dubai schools.

The Five Rating Levels

KHDA rates schools on a five-point scale: Outstanding, Very Good, Good, Acceptable, and Weak. Outstanding schools represent the top tier — typically fewer than 20% of all schools. Very Good schools are strong performers. Good schools meet expectations. Acceptable schools have areas requiring improvement. Weak schools are placed under enhanced monitoring.

What Inspectors Assess

Inspectors evaluate six key areas: student achievement, quality of teaching and learning, quality of the curriculum, personal and social development, leadership and management, and the protection and care of students. Each area is rated separately, and the overall rating reflects the combined picture.

How to Use Ratings

A rating is a snapshot, not a permanent verdict. A Good school with improving trajectory may be a better choice than a Very Good school showing decline. Always read the full inspection report, not just the headline rating. KHDA publishes detailed reports for every school on their website.

When Ratings Change

Ratings are updated annually following formal inspections. Schools can improve or decline between inspection cycles. Each school profile shows the year of its most recent KHDA inspection, so you can judge how current the rating is. Always verify the current rating directly on KHDA.gov.ae before making decisions.
