How to Choose a School in Dubai
A practical, step-by-step way to narrow Dubai's 200-plus private schools down to a shortlist you can actually visit — balancing curriculum, budget, KHDA rating, the daily school run and admissions timing.
1. Start with the curriculum, not the school
Decide the curriculum first — British, IB, American, Indian (CBSE), French and others all lead to different qualifications and university pathways. It also affects how easily your child can move schools later. If you might relocate again, British and IB tend to transfer most widely.
2. Set a realistic all-in budget
Tuition is only part of the cost. Add registration and deposit, transport, uniforms, books and devices, trips and exam fees. Work out the annual number you're comfortable with before you fall for a specific school — it's the fastest way to rule options in or out.
3. Use the KHDA rating as a filter, not a verdict
KHDA inspects the whole school and rates it Outstanding, Very Good, Good, Acceptable or Weak. Use it to build a shortlist, but remember a 'Good' school ten minutes away can suit your child better than an 'Outstanding' one across the city. Read the rating alongside fit.
4. Map the real school run
A school looks very different at 7:30am. Check realistic morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times from where you live — or plan to live — rather than just the distance on a map. A long daily commute is one of the most common regrets.
5. Shortlist four to six, then visit
Narrow to a handful that pass curriculum, budget and commute, save them to a shortlist, and book tours. Nothing replaces walking the corridors and seeing the children mid-lesson — that's where fit becomes obvious.
6. Check availability and apply early
Popular entry years (FS2, Year 7) fill quickly. Confirm there's a seat in your child's year group before you set your heart on a school, get your documents and any attestations ready, and apply early.
