Admissions Timeline
Dubai's most popular schools are heavily oversubscribed. For Outstanding-rated schools, waitlists can extend 1–3 years. Understanding the admissions cycle is critical for families relocating to Dubai.
Academic Year
Dubai follows a September–June academic year. The new academic year begins in late August or early September. Most schools begin accepting applications for the following year from October–January of the preceding year.
Application Timeline for New Arrivals
If you are relocating to Dubai: (1) Research schools 6–12 months before your planned arrival. (2) Submit applications as early as possible — many schools have rolling admissions with waitlists. (3) Contact admissions offices directly to understand current availability. (4) Have backup options across multiple schools and ratings tiers.
Assessment Requirements
Most schools require: previous school reports (last 2 years), a school reference or recommendation, English language assessment (for non-native speakers), and sometimes a student interview or assessment day. Bring certified copies of all academic records when relocating.
Mid-Year Admissions
Some schools accept mid-year admissions when places become available. Outstanding-rated schools rarely have mid-year availability. Good and Acceptable-rated schools are more likely to have places. If you are arriving mid-year, be prepared to start with a school that has availability and transfer later.
Waitlist Strategy
Register on waitlists at multiple schools simultaneously. Maintain regular, polite contact with admissions offices. Attend open days — schools often prioritise families who have demonstrated genuine interest. Being flexible on year group (if your child is on a year boundary) can sometimes open additional options.
