Dubai school FAQs
Straight answers to the questions parents ask most — choosing and applying, fees, changing schools mid-year, the school run and more.
How do I choose a school in Dubai?
Start with the constraints — budget, curriculum and how far you'll drive for the school run — then compare on KHDA rating and fit. See our how-to-choose guide or filter the directory.
How do I apply to a Dubai private school, and what documents do I need?
Apply directly to each school (usually an online form plus a registration/assessment fee). Typical documents: passport and visa copies, Emirates ID, birth certificate, recent school reports and a transfer certificate from the previous school.
What do KHDA ratings mean?
KHDA inspects every Dubai private school and gives an overall rating: Outstanding, Very Good, Good, Acceptable, Weak or Very Weak. It is the most authoritative quality signal and cannot be bought, but it is an overall judgement, so fit and commute matter too.
British, IB or American curriculum — which should I choose?
None is universally best: A-Levels allow deep specialisation, the IB is broader, and the American system uses continuous GPA assessment with AP. Choose around where you may move next and how your child learns.
How much are school fees in Dubai?
From roughly AED 10,000 to over AED 100,000 a year. The median starting fee is about AED 22,000 and 68% of schools start under AED 40,000.
What costs are there beyond tuition?
Registration and deposit, transport, uniform, books and devices, trips and sometimes meals — these can add several thousand dirhams a year.
If I join mid-year, do I pay for the whole year?
Under KHDA guidance, tuition is charged from the month your child starts, not the full year. Always confirm the exact basis with the school.
Can you change schools mid-year in Dubai?
Yes — mid-year transfers are allowed and common. The main steps are giving notice at your current school, obtaining a transfer certificate, and securing a place at the new school.
What is a transfer certificate (TC) and how do I get one?
It is the official KHDA document confirming your child has withdrawn from their current school; the new school needs it to enrol your child. You request it from the current school, which issues it through KHDA's system. Schools may withhold it until notice is served and fees are settled. In the early years a TC is not usually required.
How much notice do I have to give to leave a school?
Many schools require written notice — often a full term — and you may have to pay tuition for that notice period even if your child leaves earlier. Check your signed parent contract, as terms vary.
Will my child stay in the same year group after transferring?
KHDA requires children transferring within the UAE to be placed in the same year/grade level recorded on their transfer certificate.
Can you transfer during the exam years?
It gets harder later on. Transfers are usually fine up to around Year 9, but many schools will not admit into the middle of a two-year exam programme such as Year 11 or Year 13. Ask the target school directly.
How far should the school run be?
That is personal, but Dubai traffic makes it a daily reality — many families aim for under about 25 minutes. We show estimated drop-off and pick-up times from 16 communities.
Do Dubai schools provide bus transport?
Most do, for an additional annual fee that varies with distance. Confirm routes and cost with each school.
What about waiting lists?
Popular, higher-rated schools fill early and run waiting lists, so apply as far ahead as you can and line up realistic alternatives nearby.
General guidance — rules and fees change, so always confirm current details with the school and KHDA. See our methodology.
